Homeless World Cup
Ireland finish 5th in Homeless World Cup.

Ireland the fan’s favourites were knock out of the Homeless World Cup Finals 6-3 by a very strong Ukraine team in the quarter finals on Saturday in Milan. In what was a very tight game Ireland found their free flowing game stifled by a very competitive and organized Ukraine side. As Ireland struggled to impose themselves the Ukrainians quickly raced into a 2-goal lead. Ireland upped the tempo and got back into the game with a goal by Mark O Neill but as the Irish pressed forward they were hit on the break on the stroke of half time. The second half began with Ireland continually pressing forward but the resilient Ukrainians repulsed their efforts and again caught them on the break 4-1 for the Ukrainians. Ireland responded to the challenge and two quick goals by Mike Myers and Derek Daily saw them right back in it at 4-3. It was now all Ireland but just as it seemed they were getting back into the game a good move by the Ukrainians saw them go 5-3 ahead. It was all or nothing now and with time running out and Ireland trying to force the issue Ukraine sealed the win with a goal on the break.
It was heartbreaking for the lads as they sank to their knees at the final whistle with the realization that their World Cup dream was over. There were poignant scenes at the end as the management did their best to console their heartbroken players.
In sport as in life there is always another game another challenge and Ireland went out later that day and demolished Poland 9-1and Ghana 8-2 to secure 5th place. Out of 48 countries a truly fantastic achievement.
Ukraine who defeated Ireland went on to Win the World Cup defeating Portugal 5-4 in the final.
Mel Young, President, Homeless World Cup, closing the competition said: “Congratulations to the players. Your spirit of fair play, courage and determination is a true example to the human race. This is what the United Nations can look like. People standing together creating change. A ball can change the world.”
Milan officials handed over to Brazil for the Rio 2010 Homeless World Cup in a high-energy display of samba and colour with the Brazilians promising to deliver the best tournament ever next year.
77% of players involved in the Homeless World Cup experience a significant life change; no-longer using drugs and alcohol, moving into homes, jobs, education, training, repairing relationships and becoming coaches or players with semi-pro teams. 94% claim to have a renewed motivation for life.
“On a personal level I have to say I was very privileged to be with this Irish team. They are a tremendeous group of lads and they showed the true meaning of what it means to represent your country both on and off the pitch no team could have given more.
On behalf of our Homeless World cup team and Street leagues I would like to thank all those who have supported us throughout the year without your help none of this would have been possible”
Sean Kavanagh founder of Ireland’s Big Issues Street Soccer leagues.
