Ireland 11 : 1 Greece
After the opening parade and ceremony, Ireland took on the Greeks in the heat of the afternoon sun -30 degrees-. in their first competitive match of the tournament. After a shaky start in which Ireland conceded an early goal the power of the Irish team shone through and they completely overpowered a plucky Greek side. The game saw all 8 Irish players take part with the Coach Mick Pender fully utilizing his squad. Thomas McDonagh was the scourge of the Greek defense scoring 5 goals; such was the power of his shooting that there was an element of anticipation every time he got the ball. But this was not just a one-man show, Clayton Kelly, Dylan Sheridan, Daragh McNamara and captain Thomas O’Dwyer all contributed handsomely while little Lee Geoghegan scored a hatrick, Goalkeeping duties were shared by James Traynor and Craig Haslem and as the score line suggests they did not let the side down.
For an opening game this was a five star performance by the Irish but sterner tests are sure to come with tournament favourites Mexico next up at 7.30pm (Irish time) 20th October.
