Triumphing against the odds has always been a key part of the allure of sport.
In this documentary, RTÉ 2FM’s Paddy McKenna seeks out new sporting heroes, unsung sporting heroes, who are finding new ways to inspire and new layers of meaning in sport. Often, these are individuals and teams who overcome disability, overcome extreme or unusual forms of underdog status or who challenge prejudice or social convention, people for whom sport is more than playing games.
In this programme, Paddy profiles three teams who faced international competition during 2013.
The teams are the Irish Wheelchair Rugby team who played teams from the Czech Republic, Italy and Holland in their efforts to qualify for the European Championships in Antwerp, the Irish Gay Football team who had home advantage in their pursuit of glory and the Irish Homeless team who encountered multiple worldwide opposition in the Homeless World Cup in Poznan in August.
Profiled are Garrett Culliton, Ciara Staunton, Will Doggart and Jonny Mulhall from rugby, Francis Fitzgibbon and Ronan Herlihy from the Dublin Devils and from the Irish Homeless team Karl O’Sullivan, Derek Martin and Kieran De Lacy.
